Tool - Medicine Show - 07.25.92 - Hollywood Palladium

Notes: This is referred to as the ‘Medicine Show’. Tool opened for Rage Against The Machine. The recording itself is very rough, raw, slightly brickwalled, distant & is for those reasons probably make it a collector’s item. As the tape starts, the recorder says “Tool’s up, Tool’s up” as they come out on-stage. This is the only known acoustic performance to have been recorded - live. It is not long, about 2 minutes as it is then metamorphosized into, of all songs, Disgustipated. Very, very interesting recording - perhaps the shortest gig they’ve ever done or else it is incomplete, no one is sure. Or are they? After Tool walk off stage…. a Rage Against The Machine live set, then the recording cuts out. During the first Rage song, a shotgun goes off & I think it may be Maynard doing what he did during the performance of Disgustipated. Judging by the Shotgun blast & screams from the crowd during the first Rage song, he does it again then. This recording seems to show up on some copies of 08.29.93 as one long-track. The Rage set is almost poorer quality, audio-wise. But, it sounds to me, honestly, like tape fuzz from a VHS. I could be wrong but it sounds like a 4-5 Generation transfer to CD. This is performance every fan should listen to, if at least on a few occasions. Interesting, all around.
Notes: Recently, another version of the same recording source has surfaced. The amount of Tool’s performance is unchanged, but the Rage Against The Machine set is included. This is rather rare, apparently. I’m sure that will change soon enough but it is good to realize there are different versions floating around.

1991 Tool - Cassette Demo Tape

Notes: Tool’s demo tape. They are studio quality but have a slight tape hiss to the them, which is actually pretty hard to pick out. Interesting if you want to hear the demo’s. This was originally only in cassette format & was distributed at gigs. Soon, copies were made & they started spreading out. The demos even ended up on bootlegs like Sleep Forever. Word has it that they last one they gave out to a fan somewhere in the mid-west US during 1992 from the sound engineer or crew. Most copies of the demo tape are from MP3 source, this is not. There is a rumor that Tool did a cover of Ozzy Osbourne’s Crazy Train but all that is - a rumor. Also, there is an unreleased Rage Against The Machine w/Tool collaboration entitled “Kill The Revolutionary” that features both bands. It is of rough quality & was a demo for the film Judgment Night but was not used nor did it make it on the soundtrack — in case you don’t know, back in 1992/1993, the soundtrack featured bands like Cypress Hill w/Sonic Youth, Helmet w/House Of Pain & other metal/rap acts to collaborate on an album. Good movie as well. Anyway, the songs below are the actual studio demos, nothing ‘illicit’ or really unreleased.
Note: There are quite a few counterfeit cassette copies floating around. Beware - eBay may not be your friend.

Tool - 10,000 Days Reviews

In an age where major labels dictate that new releases from bands appear on record store shelves every 18 months or so, rare is the artist given freedom and ability to reflect and stretch out to explore creative evolution and release music as an artist, rather than the prepackaged predictability of an entertainer. Thankfully, Tool has somehow managed to circumvent these rituals, releasing a record every four to five years as they so feel the need. This ability to patiently craft their musical direction has paid off for not only the band, but for listeners, as they’ve been able to expand their musical vocabulary from album to album with great precision, all the while remaining true to the foundations that built such a loyal, if not cult-like, following. But with this absence comes changes to the popular music landscape, as new bands and sounds (as well as a new generation of heavy metal fans to entertain) replace and stimulate the charts.

Most critics praised the album as another example of Tool’s musicianship. Critics who gave 10,000 Days a relatively low score questioned the merits of its ambient interludes, which Tool have also used on their previous releases. In addition, the song “Vicarious” was nominated for the “Best Hard Rock Performance” Grammy. Rolling Stone magazine named it the 38th Best Album of 2006. The album (as aforementioned) also received a Grammy in 2006 for Best Recording Package. In 2008, 10,000 Days garnered another Grammy nod when “The Pot” was nominated for “Best Hard Rock Performance”.
