Tool Vinyl Buyers Guide

This guide is a buyers/sellers guide for tool vinyl. I have put together all the information you will need to find the correct official tool vinyl. It sickens me how much money bootlegers are making on Ebay from dodgy bootlegs and rip off- reissues which are actually just bootlegs also. Here are some tips to ensure you get the right vinyl.

Tip 1 - Know what year the vinyl was first pressed

Tip 2 - Know what the catalog number is

Tip 3 - Know what the original artwork looks like

Tip 4 - If buying online, particularly on Ebay ask sellers questions - with all the information you have in this guide you should be able to ask the sort of questions that will ensure you get official vinyl. What is a catalog number? Can I see a photo of the label or inlay?

Opiate - Vinyl, 12", EP

Released: 17 Sep 1996

  • A1- Sweat 3:47
  • A2- Hush 2:48
  • A3- Part Of Me 3:17
  • B1- Cold And Ugly (Live) 4:10
  • B2- Jerk-Off (Live) 4:22
  • B3- Opiate 5:22

Catalog#: 72445-11027-1

These first pressings should still have "PARENTAL ADVISORY" stickers on the front of the jacket (unlike later repressings that have it printed on the jacket.) Side B is double cut, e.g. if you nudge the needle over on Cold & Ugly (B1), you hit a second groove, which plays the hidden track The Gaping Lotus Experience.

Catalog#: 61422-31027-1 - Reissue

This Volcano reissue uses a sleeve that still contains the Zoo logo. The label says Volcano. Because of that, the old Zoo cat# of 72445-11027-1 is in small print on the back, however, the vinyl contains the new cat#. Side B is double cut.

  • Etching: Side A: 72445-11027-1-A1 (some copies state: 61422-31027-1-A1 instead) Side B: 72445-11027-1-B1
  • Label: ℗ & © Volcano Entertainment 3, L.L.C. Manufactured by Zomba Recording Corporation. Printed in the U.S.A.
  • Back of vinyl: ℗© 1992 BMG Music. Manufactured and distributed by BMG Entertainment. Barcode: 6 1422-31027-1 9

Catalog#: 61422-31027-1 - Mispress

This mispress plays side B on both sides. This Volcano reissue uses a sleeve that still contains the Zoo logo. The label says Volcano. Because of that, the old Zoo cat# of 72445-11027-1 is in small print on the back, however, the vinyl contains the new cat#.

Differences from the correct pressing:

  • The spine does not contain the name of the EP or the band.
  • The copyright information is a slightly different font and colour.
  • The Parental Advisory is not part of the sleeve, it is a sticker.
  • Both sides are double cut.

Etching: 72445-11027-1-A1 on both sides.

So I bought Aenima today. It had the original pressing writing on the back. How could this be? It had one clear vinyl disc and one yellow. The original had black vinyl. I only found out after I paid for this. Lucky for me, I bought it at a record shop in Cincinnati Ohio. I’m shocked they would sell fakes. Or am I wrong? From what I have seen, it’s a fake. I wish it were not. I’m very sad now.

  2. admin on June 14th, 2010 10:55 pm

Hi again Richard, all it would take is someone to scan the original vinyl sleeve and they could replicate the original, to be sure you need to see a range of evidence, the vinyl itself, the inlay and artwork. The Aenima cover must be one of the easiest and most profitable albums to bootleg, as it is so simple in design…even better seal it, then no-one will ever know what’s inside…I am sure that’s the case with some of the sealed copies of Aenima we see selling on eBay, but there’s not much you can do about it. Sorry for your bad experience in landing a bootleg, sometimes feels like the bad guys a winning!

  3. admin on June 14th, 2010 10:58 pm

The clear and yellow Aenima copies are fake for sure though!

Can you let me know if this is real? The ebay auction# is 110555818180. I really want it if it is real

  5. Mat on August 5th, 2010 9:26 pm

2 days ago i had purchased the lateralus LP from a local record shop and i believe it is original, however i am having doubts because the cat# etched on the record itself is the same as the one written in the buyers guide but has the letters RE after, not LP, also the cat# printed on the back is 61422-3116-1 LP not 61422-31160-1 LP as it is in the buyers guide, everything else matches up with what is supposed to make it original because on the inner sleeve the correct cat# is written and everything looks like it is supposed too. so if anyone has information on whether or not this is a re-issue it would be greatly appreciated.

I was looking at purchasing Salival on vinyl and was wondering if you could give me some heads up on some of the final details i.e catalog numbers and dates on vinyl release. thanks

this is the e-bay item in question

Hi Angus, unfortunately Tool has never released Salival on Vinyl, so any copies of it that you find are in fact Bootlegs….including the auction you have linked to. Check out the fake tool vinyl guide for more info: http://toolvinyl.com/fake-tool-vinyl-guide/

  8. Fletchism on September 9th, 2010 5:28 am

I know this site is dedicated to vinyl, but I was wondering if you could post some info on Tool’s 72826 demo cassette? Does anyone know how many are out there? And what do fans/collectors think they are worth? Any info would be appreciated!

  9. HS on September 17th, 2010 8:24 pm

Hi! This site is great!! Maybe you can answer a couple questions for me.

How much should one expect to pay for the “Cesaro Summability 12″, Promo, Picture Disc, Limited Edition
Released: 1996″? (I copied and pasted this information from your Buyer’s Guide.) Ballpark is fine.

I know the LP is authentic–and . . . it is autographed by all members of the band! (The bassist who signed it is not the bassist on the recoding.) It is in perfect condition.

Thanks for any help you are willing to give!

    Heidi

  10. admin on September 17th, 2010 8:41 pm

Hi Heidi, this vinyl sells for $250 on eBay when it’s not signed. Signed by the band should at least double the value. $500-$600 for an authentic signed copy would be an estimate. Having said that you could easily get much more than that if you find the right buyer. You could try listing it on the marketplace… Might help finding the right buyer if you want to sell. These sort of things are only worth what someone is willing to pay.

  11. admin on September 17th, 2010 8:50 pm

Also check out this page for a history of how muted signed tool items have sold on eBay for: http://www.popsike.com/php/quicksearch.php?searchtext=Tool+signed&x=0&y=0

  12. HS on September 17th, 2010 9:24 pm

My god! Thank you so much.

Okay (deep breath) I’m going to list it on ebay, and then list it on your Marketplace.

I hate to part with it, but the time is right for me.

    Thanks again!

    Heidi

  13. jordan t d on October 13th, 2010 8:03 pm

can someone please help me; i bought the aenima vinyl awhile back and it sounds great, it was sealed when i bought it so i had no idea what was inside, but all the artwork is there and the labels and what not. the only thing is, is that its an orange vinyl and ive NEVER seen another like it anywhere, not on any websites, not even on ebay. can someone who maybes knows more about the record than i do explain to me what i have.

  14. admin on October 14th, 2010 1:57 pm

Hi Jordan, Aenima didn’t come out on vinyl in any colour other that black….so it’s a bootleg for sure. Sorry about that.

  15. jordan t d on October 14th, 2010 2:23 pm

aww well, im still happy cause it sounds great. thanks for the info

  16. ryan on October 27th, 2010 9:08 pm

Is there another issue of Opiate? I’ve seen what appears to be the reissue, but it has the Parental Advisory Sticker like the 1st press. When did the Parental advisory start getting printed?

  17. ryan on October 28th, 2010 4:03 am

    Also,

Discogs shows the original press of Undertow to have the same jacket as the promo with a green vinyl and still does not contain the last song. The reference number is 72445-11052-1. Is this info correct. Discogs shows the last son showing up on the first repress in 1996 with the known cover..

    Hi
Please see this link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zYqhl05QK7A and 2 last ocmments about Aenima coloured LPs. Is it true or pirates/fake bootlegers are trying to deceive Tool fans which already bougt tons of those coloured fakes?
    regards
    Krzysztof

  19. admin on November 22nd, 2010 12:17 pm

Hi Krzysztof, The same person wrote both of those last two comments…and the yellow…colored vinyl is a bootleg for sure…100%. He is probably a seller himself.

  22. Brian on January 18th, 2011 9:36 pm

I hate to even ask this considering it’s a Tool guide but does anyone know of any significant differences between the A Perfect Circle – Mer De Noms original vinyl and 180G repress? Meaning differences on the cover to tell from a sealed copy and any differences to the inside if I find a used copy. Again, sorry for asking about something other than Tool, but this seemed like the best outlet and alot of you guys/gals seem quite knowledgeable. I already checked discogs and there’s not enough info to tell the difference as the catalog number is the same. Also, if no one knows, can you point me in the direction of a GOOD fan site?

  23. Brian on January 18th, 2011 9:40 pm

Also, Krzysztof….The Lateralus you mentioned on December 1st is real. Check http://www.discogs.com as it’s a great reference and has most but not all releases from the majority of bands.

  24. admin on January 18th, 2011 10:03 pm

Hi Brian, I can’t find any info to figure out the difference. If you look at http://www.popsike.com/php/quicksearch.php?searchtext=Mer+De+Noms&thumbs=&currsel=&x=15&y=13 – You can see all the old auctions on eBay for Mer De Noms, and the cat number is the same on the original and the re-print: 7243 8 49253 1 4. I guess if you avoid vinyl with the gold Capital sticker on the front, that’s a start. Maybe you can find something by looking at all auctions. I have a copy of the reprint, but not the original.

  25. Brian on January 18th, 2011 11:04 pm

Well, thanks so much for your timely response. Do you happen to know of any decent APC fan sites?

  26. admin on January 19th, 2011 12:03 am

Sorry, I don’t know any APC fan sites.

  27. ryan on January 20th, 2011 6:24 pm

Is the original pressing of OPIATE have a black label? I have seen that the repress has a white label. Does the original have a barcode identifier?

  28. admin on January 20th, 2011 7:05 pm

The first pressings should still have “PARENTAL ADVISORY” stickers on the front of the jacket (unlike later repressings that have it printed on the jacket.) The Volcano reissue uses a sleeve that still contains the Zoo logo. The label says Volcano. Because of that, the old Zoo cat# of 72445-11027-1 is in small print on the back, however, the vinyl contains the new cat#.

    Cat for old original: 72445-11027-1
    Cat for reissues: 61422-31027-1

Thanks Admin. So they look the same on the outside. So a “Sealed” copy can only be identified by the sticker. Is it in the same spot and the same size? It’s kind of hard to tell looking at a picture and not being able to hold it. However, does anybody know if the original has a UPC? Does anybody have a copy of the original who can look?

  30. john on January 22nd, 2011 1:16 pm

could someone please tell me what the original pressing of opiate should say on the label?

  31. Brian on January 22nd, 2011 1:57 pm

    @John

There’s a few ways to tell if the difference between the original and the repress.

    1. The catalog number on the original is 72445-11027-1
    2. The original includes paper artwork insert
    3. There’s a big parental advisory sticker on the cover. The repress has a small parental advisory logo printed (not a sticker) on the bottom right corner of the EP jacket.
    4. The labels are black on the original and white on the repress (as far as I know, can someone confirm that about the labels?)

Be careful when puchasing Opiate off on ebay or other online sites. Alot of people put up stock pictures/borrowed pics from the internet and not a picture of the actual item you’re buying. So you may see an ebay auction that has a picture of the original with the big parental advisory sticker when he/she is actually selling the repress. Always ask questions when buying from online places if you’re unsure.
    Hope this helps!

  32. Michael Green on January 31st, 2011 10:03 pm

I just bought a sealed Aenima… and it has all the right printing on the bottom back.. no stickers… and does not have the serial number on the bottom spine.. it was purchased in 2000 per seller… I own a sealed one that is identical to this but does not have the serial number on spine but has the stickers on the shrink wrap… I have another opened copy that has the serial number on the spine, very faint, and is an Original… How can I distinguish an original from a fake with a sealed copy.. Must an original have the serial number printed on the spine…. Very confusing… I would appreciate any real help I can get.. Thank you ahead of time.. I do have pics if needed…

  33. ryan on January 31st, 2011 10:58 pm

    Michael,

I saw this one as well. The guy was unsure if it was an original or not. I asked him to put up a picture of the spine and he pointed me to the pictures he had without it. I don’t have any copy, so I’m just as confused. I don’t think I’ll be going for a sealed copy.

  34. Michael Green on February 1st, 2011 12:23 am

    Thanks Ryan… I hope someone out knows….

  35. Brian on February 1st, 2011 1:35 am

Michael, did you just recently buy that on ebay from a seller named “terrie_keenan” for $189.50? If so, I e-mailed that guy a few times while the auction was going and he seemed a bit shady and I think he was making up stories to sell a bootleg as an original. If you bought from that guy, beware. He has 8 feedback and he has already sold 2 sealed copies of Aenima.

  36. Erik on March 6th, 2011 1:34 pm

I have an AENIMA album that has all the proper markings but the vinyls themselves are colored . one is gray and the other is yellow with a slight tie dye effect .Both vinyls have 72445-11087-1 engraved on them with a A B C and D after each -1 . there was no parental advisory sticker on the plastic rap or on the cover of the LP and no serial number on the spine . Is it possible these are a bootleg .

  37. admin on March 6th, 2011 1:51 pm

Hi Erik, yes all the colored Aenima vinyl’s are bootlegs.

  38. Erik on March 6th, 2011 3:29 pm

Ok I figured it so . Maybe you could use this pic to show people what a counterfeit looks like /Users/erikgraul/Pictures/Aperture Library.aplibrary/Untitled Project (3).approject/2011-03-06 @ 05:24:44 PM – 2.apimportgroup/IMG_2640/Previews/IMG_2640.jpg

Did the Lateralus Promo Picture Disc come in a sleeve?

  40. Joe on April 13th, 2011 7:55 am

    Hi,
With regards to the Original pressings of Aenima, Does anyone know if the number on the sticker on the shrink wrap (72445-11087-1) should match the number on the spine (61422-31087-1). Does the fact that they don’t match raise a red flag?

    Thanks.

  41. Moz on April 14th, 2011 12:36 pm

    Howdy,

    Quick question…

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Tool-Undertow-2LP-orig-Perfect-Circle-/140534059815?pt=Music_on_Vinyl&hash=item20b87b9327

Any ideas if this is the real deal? The buyer’s guide above states the 1996 reissue had a parental advisory sticker on the front (as does this). Did the ’93 press have one at all?

    Cheers!

  42. ryan on April 15th, 2011 6:12 am

    Howdy,

I’d say ask if the catalog number on the label has the “RE” at the end. Or get a picture of it.

  43. josh on April 16th, 2011 2:00 pm

I picked up a sealed copy of Aenima at a record store today and on the back it looks legit for catalog number 72445-11087-1. However, I see no catalog number on the spine itself. Is this probably a fake? I don’t want to risk opening it if it’s legit.

  44. Michael Green on April 17th, 2011 2:08 am

Hi Josh.. if it has the advisory sticker and the other one, it has a much higher change of being legit… If not, it would probably be best to open it.. to see. Because you are not going to want to sell it sealed without stickers… Maybe someone will know the answer whether, If stickers then authentic.. and I believe the sticker on the shrink too.. Best, Michael

  45. CharlestonChew on April 18th, 2011 1:19 pm

Was wondering, I picked up Aenima,Opiate and Undertow a year ago for about 90$. The barcode # on the back of Aenima reads 6 1422-31087-1. There us also the # 72445-11087-1 written bettween the “printed in the USA” and the Zoo logo. It also has full art work for the sleeves of each vinyl. There is no parental advisory sticker attached to the front. It may have been removed because the both the records and covers are all very used. I’m not sure which pressing this is. I was hoping you could clarify this up. Thanks.

  46. CharlestonChew on April 18th, 2011 1:30 pm

Oh yeah and the actual vinyl discs themselves have printed labels that have faint designs on them. Inside the groove at the end of the discs have 72445-11087-1-a1 (b1,c1,d1).

  47. Rodrigo Jones on May 22nd, 2011 11:50 am

Hi, I´m from Mexico, yesterday I bought the AEnima vinyl, I was sure to see all the signs, all the guide to buy an origiginal Tool vinyl. I bought from an independent seller, because here there are not much music stores, so I bought, evarything it’s fine, the cover, the back bottom legends, the numbres, codes and even the inlay artwork, but… I have one grey disc (A/B side) and one yellow (C/D side).. so, I think I’ve been swindled… right?

  48. admin on May 22nd, 2011 11:52 am

Yes….the yellow vinyl is fake, sorry.

  49. Michael Green on May 22nd, 2011 2:09 pm

Hello Rodrigo.. sorry about the forgery.. Did you buy it sealed? Did it have the two stickers on the shrink wrap… Live and learn… I hope you did not pay too much…

  51. Rodrigo Jones on May 23rd, 2011 8:38 am

Hi Michael, you say yellow vinyl (solid colour, not clear) is fake, so the grey? And yes, I bought it sealed but without any stickers… and I don’t know if I pay a lot, about $1,200 MX pesos, that would be like $100 USD…

  52. Brent C. on June 3rd, 2011 9:21 am

A friend of mine recently got a copy of Aenima and the back bottom reads: “The Zoo Entertainment logo is a trademark of Volcano Entertainment. • ℗ © 1996 Volcano Entertainment LLC 1540 Broadway New York, NY 10036 • Warning All Rights reserved • Unauthorized Duplication Is A Violation OF Applicable Laws • Manufactured and Distributed by BMG Entertainment, New York, NY • Printed in U.S.A. • 61422-31145-1″. It is sealed, BUT also has the “Parental Advisory” sticker on it (which is UNDER the shrink wrap) and a “TOOL Aenima” sticker OUTSIDE the shrink wrap. This sticker has the number 72445-11087-1 on it as well. Is it safe to assume this is a Bootleg copy?? Thanks for any feedback!

  55. Steve on June 9th, 2011 2:00 pm

well dang. I just found Aenima [72445 11087 1] at a record store, and bought it. Matched everything here exactly… Except it’s orange.

  56. admin on June 9th, 2011 3:53 pm

Steve, I guess the bootleggers are copying the original sleeve, makes life hard spotting the authentic .

  57. Credulous_Sap on June 17th, 2011 3:43 am

Question: (If you’re still answering them)

Are you sure that the Ænima pressings you have listed aren’t swapped?

Ænima came out on vinyl on September 17, 1996. BMG owned Zoo but sold them in August of 1996. A month before the album came out. Wouldn’t that mean that the vinyl with the BMG and the Zoo logo on the back would be the first pressing? If BMG owned the Zoo label, they would have definitely put their logo on the back also. I can’t see Zoo pressing the album and then pressing it again with the logo of the label that just sold them. That doesn’t make any sense?

    What are your thoughts?

    Thanks

  58. tyler on June 25th, 2011 6:06 pm

Where can I buy a legit vinyl of Aenima? I don’t want to buy on ebay, it seems like everything is fake, but there aren’t a whole lot of other sites out there. Does anyone know of a legit site/store, I need to add this to my collection.

  59. rollerskates on July 7th, 2011 8:10 pm

Brent C. – My opened copy of 61422-31145-1 has a PA sticker stuck on the record sleeve. My two sealed copies of 61422-31087-1 have the TOOL sticker (72445-11087-1) and the PA sticker on the outside of the shrink wrap. All of these records have been in my possession for over a decade. Hope this info can be of help to you.

  60. efrem on October 14th, 2011 9:34 pm

    hey there.
i’m not sure why u’ve listed my Tool – Aenima record on your site as a fake. Ebay item number: 270833498291. This item is an original sealed 1996 pressing.
    Catalog#: 72445 11087 1 – Pressing B (2nd Pressing)
I would appreciate it if u removed my listing as “fake” on your website bcuz it is indeed the real deal.
i can appreciate that u are wanting to help avid collectors and Tool fans to be careful when purchasing Tool collectibles, but in this case u are misleading people with your incorrect findings.
    Thank u.

  61. admin on October 14th, 2011 10:51 pm

What are you talking about efrem, your vinyl is in no way listed as fake…it is on the site as a related auction, I am simply suggesting viewers be careful when buying from eBay because it is loaded with fakes. Having said that I think you are charging an extortionist price for your vinyl.

  62. Urfe on October 20th, 2011 6:08 am

I picked up a red vinyl of Lateralus earlier today, i take it that it is a fake as it is not listed on here?

  63. J on January 25th, 2012 11:35 am

    Hey,
In the past year I have bought three different copies of the Undertow reissue on vinyl from three legitamte music stores in Canada (including amazon) and have had to return all three because of an identical warp in the record. At first look you can’t see it but, as soon as you play it the track makes the needle jump. The warp can be seen when holding the record at an angle or following the rotating of the album while its on the turntable. If I remember corrsctly its the first track on both sides of the album.
Have you ever come across this problem? Is there a defect in the reissue master? Are there different pressing for different countries?
    Thanks.

  64. Joe Reynolds on February 1st, 2012 6:47 am

So are the ebay listings I see below each album description legit vinyls? I’m confused as to whether they are examples of good legit purchases or bootlegs.

  65. Eric on February 18th, 2012 4:05 pm

Hey…I follow toolvinyl.com all the time, and I found an item at discogs where I would love to purchase the following, but there are a few things that concerned me. I’m worried I maybe purchasing a fake, so I sent the following to the seller. Can you take a moment to look at this and give your opinion??? Thank you!!

    Hello,

I have a question about the following item you have for sale on Discogs:

    http://www.discogs.com/sell/item/51558111

I’m very interested in your vinyl…but there are a few things that caught my eye that I want to verify this is a legit original, so please appreciate my concerns…thanks!

I got my information from the following that differs from your pictures and listing from here: http://toolvinyl.com/tool-vinyl-buyers-guide/

You list (Catalog#: 72445 11087 1 — Barcode: 6 1422-31087-1 1), “The BMG and Zoo Entertainment logos are trademarks of BMG Music • ℗ © 1996 BMG Music • All Rights Reserved • Manufactured and Distributed by BMG Entertainment, New York, NY • Printed in U.S.A. • 72445-11087-1″ and “there is a BMG logo” on the back from what your photos show. Also, the catalog and barcode doesn’t match.

The back for (Catalog#: 61422 31087 1 and 61422 31145 1 — Barcode: 6 1422-31087-1 1) should read Back bottom reads: “The Zoo Entertainment logo is a trademark of Volcano Entertainment. • 61422-31087-1″ and the “BMG logo should not” be on the back.

The barcodes and information on your listing doesn’t match from the website I listed above. Can you please verify and/or provide more information at your earliest convenience? Thanks!

  66. admin on February 18th, 2012 4:11 pm

    Yeah, fake for sure.

  67. admin on February 18th, 2012 4:12 pm

The ebay auctions is a widget to that pulls auctions for ebay for keywords I give it…I can’t control directly which auctions it shows….so there are lots of fakes in there.

  68. Eric on February 18th, 2012 4:30 pm

OH, and looking at the sellers photos, he/she took one from this web site…you can see the reflection of the back of someone taking the picture is the “exact” same as the one listed on this site, but is cut off where the date was implanted by the camera…then looking at the seller’s former sold items, he/she has sold 10 “Mint/Sealed” copies of Aenima…WHO THE He– has that many of this one “rare” item, unless he’s one of the band members and I doubt it.

So what set you off about this one is a fake…?

  69. admin on February 18th, 2012 4:37 pm

Eric I just sent you an email….hope that answers any questions you have. Cheers.

  70. Brian on February 19th, 2012 11:53 pm

@Eric – I’m sure the admin already helped you but I thought I’d throw a few things out there for ya. You can’t see the sales history of a given user on Discogs. It sells “sales history” under the price of that sellers auction but that’s not his sales history…it’s the history of the particular item and they’re all bootlegs. Also, the photos on the site are photos from the person who submitted the listing for the album, not the pictures of the sellers actual copy. In order to get photos of his copy, you’d have to ask him directly. I think you can trust that seller to be honest and if he did rip you off, it’s very easy to get a refund via PayPal. Just make sure you don’t send payment as a gift. I hope the admin already helped you and hope this helps too.

  71. Eric on February 20th, 2012 7:03 pm

@Brian, I discussed the photos with the seller. He’s more than willing to put together photos and send, but in order for him to take the time he needs to ensure I’m a serious buyer. He mentioned the postal costs and if I’m willing to pay it with insurance and tracking, I’m looking at about $240. Even though it’s a good price (and I’m a serious buyer), I can’t spend that much at this time. So, I just told him if I feel I will spend that amount, I’ll contact him for photos. I’d probably purchase it with postage, but if he’s not willing to provide photos first, then I’m not pushing it and will just pass on it. It doesn’t take that much time to take a photo and post it…if he’d just done that when posting, it’d probably be on it’s way by now. Thanks again for your posting to me!

  72. Eric on February 20th, 2012 7:05 pm

    @Brian, that’s $240 for vinyl, postage, insurance and tracking…not just S/H.

  73. Brian on February 21st, 2012 8:26 am

@Eric – I actually went on Discogs (it’s actually one of my favorite sites) and asked him for photos as well and he had some very strict policy about sending photos. Pretty stupid considering he’s selling a high dollar item. I was asking for photos just to help you verify by the way, wasn’t trying to take the item away from you : )

$240 is a bit much like you said. My advice is to give it some time and you will find a good deal on eBay or Discogs eventually. I bought the record back when it came out and unfortunately had to sell it back in 2005 when I seriously needed extra money. I then was able to get another copy off of eBay a few years back and I only paid $50. So just give it time and you’ll find a good deal someday. This record is long, long over due for a repress. Take care Eric!

  74. Eric on February 24th, 2012 2:27 pm

OK…I decided not to buy from seller on discogs…i’d post the email thread, but it’s too long. I’d love to share it so other buyers/fans/legits could see how cons can get. there were so many little things in the emails back/forth that sounded very convincing. i pulled out at the last minute because of some things that were stated…so, if ya’ll want the email thread i’ll post it/email it for amusement/educational purposes.

  75. Eric on February 24th, 2012 2:31 pm

@ADMIN — My virus protection at home and work are on high priority about your site here…Malware, etc are blocking the he– out of it. Are you aware of this? My workplace is eventually going to block this site automatically if it continues, then I won’t be able to visit and participate. If that happens and the site isn’t fixed, I may do the same at home…can you please check into this?? This site is highly recommended around the web, and I’d hate to see it go ape-shi-.

  76. admin on February 24th, 2012 3:34 pm

Hey Eric, Thanks for bringing that to my attention, one of the plugins the site uses was outdated, and it allowed some little wank to hack a redirect into the site. I have cleaned it up, so you shouldn’t be getting the warning anymore.

    Cheers

  77. Eric on February 25th, 2012 9:27 am

@ADMIN — KEWL! Security on my system at home is flying fine now. I’ll find out at work next week. THANKS!!!

  78. Eric on February 25th, 2012 9:31 am

@ADMIN and/or other TOOL fans. Does this site contain the complete list of all “legit” TOOL vinyl? I ask, because I’m collector a few select things and this is one of them. Accept my aplogies if that sounds like a a”non”-fan question…because I am. I just got started a little late as some finding such a cool and unique group band.

  79. Eric on February 27th, 2012 11:13 am

Sorry for this BS post, but I needed to test and ensure my work place’s firewall doesn’t freak out when I post here…If I don’t respond to this post, it means all is good.

  80. Eric on March 6th, 2012 5:51 pm

Would a “legit” original aenima vinyl catalog # 61422 31145 1 also have the same number for the barcode?

The one here in town at a local used record store has one, but the back reads like this:

“The Zoo Entertainment logo is a trademark of Volcano Entertainment. • ? © 1996 Volcano Entertainment LLC 1540 Broadway New York, NY 10036 • Warning All Rights reserved • Unauthorized Duplication Is A Violation OF Applicable Laws • Manufactured and Distributed by BMG Entertainment, New York, NY • Printed in U.S.A. • 61422-31145-1″ AND the barcode has 61422-31145-1 as well. Is this legit?

This doesn’t match up to what’s posted here…so I’m hoping someone could advise before I go back to the store and make a bogus purchase.

I took a look on popsike and there are several like the one I found, so I’m kinda confused. Here’s an example, but it doesn’t have pics like the one I’m looking at.

    I hope it wasn’t legit…it sold. *sigh*

  83. Brian on March 6th, 2012 11:33 pm

That one you linked from eBay is a legit pressing. Regarding the one you saw at a local shop….if it’s sealed and priced cheap, it’s a safe bet that it’s a bootleg. Is it a used copy or new, also what are they charging?

  84. Alan on March 8th, 2012 11:54 am

I just came across a site selling a “reissue” of Aenima. Is this for real?

    http://www.soundstagedirect.com/tool-aenima-vinyl-lp.shtml

  85. @Brian on March 9th, 2012 5:21 pm

The local store was a fake. Used, black but $29 + the catalog wasn’t right…I did however get two of the three catalog numbered vinyl recently…just need this one: 61422-31087-1

I also got a few other legit picture discs recently online and they are sweeeet. I’m in the market of someway of displaying things…any thoughts out there that would look good in my man cave?? :)

  86. Eric on March 9th, 2012 5:28 pm

@Alan – afJust looking over the site selling the aenima you’re referring to…I wouldn’t bet on it without asking them. There isn’t any information listed that would/could verify it by the page you posted. Plus I’ve never seen one go for $50/new/sealed…red flag. Also, they are selling other bootlegs such as 10,000 days and salvial…neither were put on vinyl…and they are colored…red flag #2. I’d suggest you call and ask about the catalog #’s, etc as Admin has listed above before wasting money.

  87. Brian on March 10th, 2012 9:49 am

@Eric – I don’t have any good ideas about displaying them. I buy records to listen to so mine just sit (safely protected) on an Ikea expedit. There’s 12×12 LP frames out there so that might be something you’d like to use.

  88. Eric on March 10th, 2012 10:47 am

@Brian – Ditton on this end, I as well buy to listen. I was looking for a type of display where I can see them and easily take them out when I want to listen to them. I love the way vinyl sounds, but I love showing them off as well. For now, they will remain safely on the shelf until I get something I like. Here’s one idea I found last night…I think I’m going to try one out. http://www.artvinyl.com/

  89. Brian on March 10th, 2012 2:55 pm

@Eric – That place you linked is a great concept but they’re damn expensive for what they are. Only other idea I have for you is to frame the jacket in the standard 12×12 record frames and keep the records separate in a poly sleeve. That way you can have the art on your walls and have easy access to the LPs. You can get LP frames dirt cheap if you wait for 50%-75% off sales at Michaels. You can also combine 40% receipt coupons with sales for added savings. I believe you can get em as cheap as $2.85 or so with the coupon/sale combo.

  90. Eric on March 10th, 2012 10:47 pm

@Brian – Yeah, I agree…they are pretty expensieve after taking the time to look that far into it. :) I’ll do some more checking around before jumping the gun. I’ll take your advice and check into those. Thanks for the suggestions.

  91. Eric on March 10th, 2012 11:04 pm

Alright…I just picked up a my first of two Aenima on vinyl. The first one is as follows:
——Warning code and barcode is: 61422 31145 1
    ——Vinyl code(s) are: 61422 31087 1

Does this sound familiar to anyone as legit? Reviewing this site, there’s no indication what I have now is as a legit first copy. This site states (61422 31087 1) should be on the warning and barcode.

    I hope I’m making sense…are there two 1st pressings & one 2nd pressing? An original-original (61422 31087 1), then a 2nd original-original (61422 31145 1), then a 2nd pressing (72445 11087 1)??

  92. Eric on March 11th, 2012 1:20 am

@Eric – You should refer to Discogs.com, search Tool and look at all the 2LP versions of Aenima. There’s a few different versions of legit pressings. I don’t think any of the bootlegs have 2 printed inner sleeves so that’s usually a way to tell you have legit pressings (the bootlegs come with 2 generic inner sleeves and a printed insert card that mimics the art of the legit inner sleeves). The very first pressing has designs you can actually see on the center labels and the later legit pressings has extremely faint designs that you can barely see. Honestly if you’re able to send me a bunch of pictures of both the copies you received, I can easily decipher if they’re legit. Based on the info you provided, they seem fine. Hope this helps.

@Brian – That does help. One does have faint centers, and the other has clear pics. I don’t mind taking pictures and sending them. I appreciate it! Do you have my personal email based off my postings? Or suggestion on how? I do not want to post it for everyone to see…

Eric, I will send Brian an email with your contact email so you don’t have to share you email in public. Cheers.

@Admin – Thanks! Brian, just drop me a line when you get it. This way I can email you with the pictures when I get them together.

@ Eric – thanks for the insight. I asked about the copies of Aenima, as well as the other Tool, and was told they “bought” another record shop and these were part of their inventory, so all they know is what is listed. I think I’ll stay away.

Glad asked because I just saved $50.

    hey,
I have a copy of Opiate that is not listed above…
it seems like the repress to every detail mentioned above..
the jacket, the centre labels, etc..
    but,
the etch is ‘Undertow’s Cat #….
side A plays Intolerance, prison Sex, Sober
side B plays Bottom, crawl away, swamp song
any record of this misprint? is it rare?

Can anyone recommend a website I can check past prices of TOOL vinyl to see if ones I’m looking at are reasonable? I use popsike.com and what’s available in disccogs…but i’d like another.

  100. Eric on April 6th, 2012 5:34 pm

Oh, and a free site(s) would be even better… :)

  101. Brian on April 6th, 2012 8:46 pm

@Eric – Best site I use is collectorsfrenzy.com. It’s pretty much the same as PopSike but they don’t give you a limited amount of free searches and you don’t have to sign up for anything.

@Ryan – The songs you listed are from Undertow. Side A and B of vinyl 1 of 2. It seems to me you may have gotten an Undertow (1st of 2 vinyls) in an Opiate cover??? Can you describe the picture on the center of the vinyl you have?

  104. Eric on April 9th, 2012 3:25 pm

@Ryan – Sorry, you stated the center is just like what’s listed above. I’m somewhat at a loss…but i’m sure the songs are from Undertow just as I just mentioned.

Hey, FYI, the forums on here may get more attention within the bootleg section. Admin put it out there recently and is pretty cool!

Thanks Eric, Yes Ryan if you make a post in the forum and attached a photo or two that may help.

    Cheers

@Ryan – That copy you have was from one of the batches of represses. There’s two different error pressings. One version plays Side B of Opiate on both sides. The other is obviously your copy which is the first disc of the Undertow reissue that came out at the same time but they just put the Opiate center label on a large batch of them by mistake and they ended up in stores. There’s a pretty fair amount of both screwed up versions out there so it’s not all that rare. I’m sure there’s certain collectors that would want the misspress and the wrong labeled copy just as kind of an “oddball” collectible. Hope this helps. As Eric mentioned, there’s now a forum section for this site so go ahead and sign up if you’d like. It’s a lot easier to navigate as you don’t have to read through one giant, continuous comment string.
