72445-11027-1 – 1996 Original Release

These pressings have the Zoo cat# 72445-11027-1 printed on the back cover, inner sleeve and labels. PA “Explicit Lyrics” sticker (a bigger one) is placed on cover (under shrink). Sealed in old style with vertical shrink overlap visible on back. Inner sleeves are printed and contains the cat# on front bottom center of sleeve (printed in white). The labels are black.

61422-31027-1 – Volcano Reissue – 1997

Notes: This Volcano reissue uses a sleeve that still contains the Zoo logo. The label says Volcano. Because of that, the old Zoo cat# of 72445-11027-1 is in small print on the back, however, the vinyl contains the new cat#. These have “PARENTAL ADVISORY” stickers on the front of the jacket (unlike later repressings that have it printed on the jacket.) Side B is double cut, e.g. if you nudge the needle over on Cold & Ugly (B1), you hit a second groove, which plays the hidden track The Gaping Lotus Experience. Manufactured By – Zomba Recording Corporation, Distributed By – BMG Music – Phonographic Copyright (p) – Volcano Entertainment III

Differences from the correct pressing:

  • The spine does not contain the name of the EP or the band.
  • The copyright information is a slightly different font and colour.
  • The Parental Advisory is not part of the sleeve, it is a sticker.
  • Both sides are double cut.

Etching: 72445-11027-1-A1 on both sides.

Catalog#: 61422-31027-1 – Undertow Mispress

  1. A friend of mine recently got a copy of Aenima and the back bottom reads: “The Zoo Entertainment logo is a trademark of Volcano Entertainment. ? 1996 Volcano Entertainment LLC 1540 Broadway New York, NY 10036 Warning All Rights reserved Unauthorized Duplication Is A Violation OF Applicable Laws Manufactured and Distributed by BMG Entertainment, New York, NY Printed in U.S.A. 61422-31145-1”. It is sealed, BUT also has the “Parental Advisory” sticker on it (which is UNDER the shrink wrap) and a “TOOL Aenima” sticker OUTSIDE the shrink wrap. This sticker has the number 72445-11087-1 on it as well. Is it safe to assume this is a Bootleg copy?? Thanks for any feedback!

  2. well dang. I just found Aenima [72445 11087 1] at a record store, and bought it. Matched everything here exactly… Except it’s orange.

  3. Steve, I guess the bootleggers are copying the original sleeve, makes life hard spotting the authentic .

Question: (If you’re still answering them)

Are you sure that the nima pressings you have listed aren’t swapped?

nima came out on vinyl on September 17, 1996. BMG owned Zoo but sold them in August of 1996. A month before the album came out. Wouldn’t that mean that the vinyl with the BMG and the Zoo logo on the back would be the first pressing? If BMG owned the Zoo label, they would have definitely put their logo on the back also. I can’t see Zoo pressing the album and then pressing it again with the logo of the label that just sold them. That doesn’t make any sense?

    What are your thoughts?

    Thanks

  5. Where can I buy a legit vinyl of Aenima? I don’t want to buy on ebay, it seems like everything is fake, but there aren’t a whole lot of other sites out there. Does anyone know of a legit site/store, I need to add this to my collection.

  6. Brent C. – My opened copy of 61422-31145-1 has a PA sticker stuck on the record sleeve. My two sealed copies of 61422-31087-1 have the TOOL sticker (72445-11087-1) and the PA sticker on the outside of the shrink wrap. All of these records have been in my possession for over a decade. Hope this info can be of help to you.

  7. hey there.
i’m not sure why u’ve listed my Tool – Aenima record on your site as a fake. Ebay item number: 270833498291. This item is an original sealed 1996 pressing.
    Catalog#: 72445 11087 1 – Pressing B (2nd Pressing)
I would appreciate it if u removed my listing as “fake” on your website bcuz it is indeed the real deal.
i can appreciate that u are wanting to help avid collectors and Tool fans to be careful when purchasing Tool collectibles, but in this case u are misleading people with your incorrect findings.
    Thank u.

  8. What are you talking about efrem, your vinyl is in no way listed as fake…it is on the site as a related auction, I am simply suggesting viewers be careful when buying from eBay because it is loaded with fakes. Having said that I think you are charging an extortionist price for your vinyl.

  9. I picked up a red vinyl of Lateralus earlier today, i take it that it is a fake as it is not listed on here?

  10. Hey,
In the past year I have bought three different copies of the Undertow reissue on vinyl from three legitamte music stores in Canada (including amazon) and have had to return all three because of an identical warp in the record. At first look you can’t see it but, as soon as you play it the track makes the needle jump. The warp can be seen when holding the record at an angle or following the rotating of the album while its on the turntable. If I remember corrsctly its the first track on both sides of the album.
Have you ever come across this problem? Is there a defect in the reissue master? Are there different pressing for different countries?
    Thanks.

  11. So are the ebay listings I see below each album description legit vinyls? I’m confused as to whether they are examples of good legit purchases or bootlegs.

  12. Hey…I follow toolvinyl.com all the time, and I found an item at discogs where I would love to purchase the following, but there are a few things that concerned me. I’m worried I maybe purchasing a fake, so I sent the following to the seller. Can you take a moment to look at this and give your opinion??? Thank you!!

    Hello,

I have a question about the following item you have for sale on Discogs:

    http://www.discogs.com/sell/item/51558111

I’m very interested in your vinyl…but there are a few things that caught my eye that I want to verify this is a legit original, so please appreciate my concerns…thanks!

I got my information from the following that differs from your pictures and listing from here: http://toolvinyl.com/tool-vinyl-buyers-guide/

You list (Catalog#: 72445 11087 1 — Barcode: 6 1422-31087-1 1), “The BMG and Zoo Entertainment logos are trademarks of BMG Music ? 1996 BMG Music All Rights Reserved Manufactured and Distributed by BMG Entertainment, New York, NY Printed in U.S.A. 72445-11087-1” and “there is a BMG logo” on the back from what your photos show. Also, the catalog and barcode doesn’t match.

The back for (Catalog#: 61422 31087 1 and 61422 31145 1 — Barcode: 6 1422-31087-1 1) should read Back bottom reads: “The Zoo Entertainment logo is a trademark of Volcano Entertainment. 61422-31087-1” and the “BMG logo should not” be on the back.

The barcodes and information on your listing doesn’t match from the website I listed above. Can you please verify and/or provide more information at your earliest convenience? Thanks!

  13. The ebay auctions is a widget to that pulls auctions for ebay for keywords I give it…I can’t control directly which auctions it shows….so there are lots of fakes in there.

  14. OH, and looking at the sellers photos, he/she took one from this web site…you can see the reflection of the back of someone taking the picture is the “exact” same as the one listed on this site, but is cut off where the date was implanted by the camera…then looking at the seller’s former sold items, he/she has sold 10 “Mint/Sealed” copies of Aenima…WHO THE He– has that many of this one “rare” item, unless he’s one of the band members and I doubt it.

So what set you off about this one is a fake…?

  15. @Eric – I’m sure the admin already helped you but I thought I’d throw a few things out there for ya. You can’t see the sales history of a given user on Discogs. It sells “sales history” under the price of that sellers auction but that’s not his sales history…it’s the history of the particular item and they’re all bootlegs. Also, the photos on the site are photos from the person who submitted the listing for the album, not the pictures of the sellers actual copy. In order to get photos of his copy, you’d have to ask him directly. I think you can trust that seller to be honest and if he did rip you off, it’s very easy to get a refund via PayPal. Just make sure you don’t send payment as a gift. I hope the admin already helped you and hope this helps too.

  16. @Brian, I discussed the photos with the seller. He’s more than willing to put together photos and send, but in order for him to take the time he needs to ensure I’m a serious buyer. He mentioned the postal costs and if I’m willing to pay it with insurance and tracking, I’m looking at about $240. Even though it’s a good price (and I’m a serious buyer), I can’t spend that much at this time. So, I just told him if I feel I will spend that amount, I’ll contact him for photos. I’d probably purchase it with postage, but if he’s not willing to provide photos first, then I’m not pushing it and will just pass on it. It doesn’t take that much time to take a photo and post it…if he’d just done that when posting, it’d probably be on it’s way by now. Thanks again for your posting to me!

  17. @Eric – I actually went on Discogs (it’s actually one of my favorite sites) and asked him for photos as well and he had some very strict policy about sending photos. Pretty stupid considering he’s selling a high dollar item. I was asking for photos just to help you verify by the way, wasn’t trying to take the item away from you : )

$240 is a bit much like you said. My advice is to give it some time and you will find a good deal on eBay or Discogs eventually. I bought the record back when it came out and unfortunately had to sell it back in 2005 when I seriously needed extra money. I then was able to get another copy off of eBay a few years back and I only paid $50. So just give it time and you’ll find a good deal someday. This record is long, long over due for a repress. Take care Eric!

  18. OK…I decided not to buy from seller on discogs…i’d post the email thread, but it’s too long. I’d love to share it so other buyers/fans/legits could see how cons can get. there were so many little things in the emails back/forth that sounded very convincing. i pulled out at the last minute because of some things that were stated…so, if ya’ll want the email thread i’ll post it/email it for amusement/educational purposes.

  19. @ADMIN — My virus protection at home and work are on high priority about your site here…Malware, etc are blocking the he– out of it. Are you aware of this? My workplace is eventually going to block this site automatically if it continues, then I won’t be able to visit and participate. If that happens and the site isn’t fixed, I may do the same at home…can you please check into this?? This site is highly recommended around the web, and I’d hate to see it go ape-shi-.

  20. Hey Eric, Thanks for bringing that to my attention, one of the plugins the site uses was outdated, and it allowed some little wank to hack a redirect into the site. I have cleaned it up, so you shouldn’t be getting the warning anymore.

    Cheers

  21. @ADMIN — KEWL! Security on my system at home is flying fine now. I’ll find out at work next week. THANKS!!!

  22. @ADMIN and/or other TOOL fans. Does this site contain the complete list of all “legit” TOOL vinyl? I ask, because I’m collector a few select things and this is one of them. Accept my aplogies if that sounds like a a”non”-fan question…because I am. I just got started a little late as some finding such a cool and unique group band.

  23. Sorry for this BS post, but I needed to test and ensure my work place’s firewall doesn’t freak out when I post here…If I don’t respond to this post, it means all is good.

  24. Would a “legit” original aenima vinyl catalog # 61422 31145 1 also have the same number for the barcode?

The one here in town at a local used record store has one, but the back reads like this:

“The Zoo Entertainment logo is a trademark of Volcano Entertainment. 61422-31145-1” AND the barcode has 61422-31145-1 as well. Is this legit?

This doesn’t match up to what’s posted here…so I’m hoping someone could advise before I go back to the store and make a bogus purchase.

I took a look on popsike and there are several like the one I found, so I’m kinda confused. Here’s an example, but it doesn’t have pics like the one I’m looking at.

    http://www.popsike.com/TOOL-nima-2LP-USA-Original-61422-31145-1-1996-KORN/280671935137.html

    Help plz…

  25. That one you linked from eBay is a legit pressing. Regarding the one you saw at a local shop….if it’s sealed and priced cheap, it’s a safe bet that it’s a bootleg. Is it a used copy or new, also what are they charging?

  26. The local store was a fake. Used, black but $29 + the catalog wasn’t right…I did however get two of the three catalog numbered vinyl recently…just need this one: 61422-31087-1

I also got a few other legit picture discs recently online and they are sweeeet. I’m in the market of someway of displaying things…any thoughts out there that would look good in my man cave?? 🙂

  27. @Alan – afJust looking over the site selling the aenima you’re referring to…I wouldn’t bet on it without asking them. There isn’t any information listed that would/could verify it by the page you posted. Plus I’ve never seen one go for $50/new/sealed…red flag. Also, they are selling other bootlegs such as 10,000 days and salvial…neither were put on vinyl…and they are colored…red flag #2. I’d suggest you call and ask about the catalog #’s, etc as Admin has listed above before wasting money.

  28. @Eric – I don’t have any good ideas about displaying them. I buy records to listen to so mine just sit (safely protected) on an Ikea expedit. There’s 12×12 LP frames out there so that might be something you’d like to use.

  29. @Brian – Ditton on this end, I as well buy to listen. I was looking for a type of display where I can see them and easily take them out when I want to listen to them. I love the way vinyl sounds, but I love showing them off as well. For now, they will remain safely on the shelf until I get something I like. Here’s one idea I found last night…I think I’m going to try one out. http://www.artvinyl.com/

  30. @Eric – That place you linked is a great concept but they’re damn expensive for what they are. Only other idea I have for you is to frame the jacket in the standard 12×12 record frames and keep the records separate in a poly sleeve. That way you can have the art on your walls and have easy access to the LPs. You can get LP frames dirt cheap if you wait for 50%-75% off sales at Michaels. You can also combine 40% receipt coupons with sales for added savings. I believe you can get em as cheap as $2.85 or so with the coupon/sale combo.

  31. @Brian – Yeah, I agree…they are pretty expensieve after taking the time to look that far into it. 🙂 I’ll do some more checking around before jumping the gun. I’ll take your advice and check into those. Thanks for the suggestions.

  32. Alright…I just picked up a my first of two Aenima on vinyl. The first one is as follows:
——Warning code and barcode is: 61422 31145 1
    ——Vinyl code(s) are: 61422 31087 1

Does this sound familiar to anyone as legit? Reviewing this site, there’s no indication what I have now is as a legit first copy. This site states (61422 31087 1) should be on the warning and barcode.

    I hope I’m making sense…are there two 1st pressings & one 2nd pressing? An original-original (61422 31087 1), then a 2nd original-original (61422 31145 1), then a 2nd pressing (72445 11087 1)??

  33. Ok…please disregard my above posting. I got both vinyl today in the mail. Here’s what I got. I’m a bit confused compared to this site. Anyone with thoughts on the following being legit? Thanks!!!

  34. @Eric – You should refer to Discogs.com, search Tool and look at all the 2LP versions of Aenima. There’s a few different versions of legit pressings. I don’t think any of the bootlegs have 2 printed inner sleeves so that’s usually a way to tell you have legit pressings (the bootlegs come with 2 generic inner sleeves and a printed insert card that mimics the art of the legit inner sleeves). The very first pressing has designs you can actually see on the center labels and the later legit pressings has extremely faint designs that you can barely see. Honestly if you’re able to send me a bunch of pictures of both the copies you received, I can easily decipher if they’re legit. Based on the info you provided, they seem fine. Hope this helps.

  35. @Brian – That does help. One does have faint centers, and the other has clear pics. I don’t mind taking pictures and sending them. I appreciate it! Do you have my personal email based off my postings? Or suggestion on how? I do not want to post it for everyone to see…

  36. Eric, I will send Brian an email with your contact email so you don’t have to share you email in public. Cheers.

  37. @Admin – Thanks! Brian, just drop me a line when you get it. This way I can email you with the pictures when I get them together.

  38. @ Eric – thanks for the insight. I asked about the copies of Aenima, as well as the other Tool, and was told they “bought” another record shop and these were part of their inventory, so all they know is what is listed. I think I’ll stay away.

Glad asked because I just saved $50.

  39. hey,
I have a copy of Opiate that is not listed above…
it seems like the repress to every detail mentioned above..
the jacket, the centre labels, etc..
    but,
the etch is ‘Undertow’s Cat #….
side A plays Intolerance, prison Sex, Sober
side B plays Bottom, crawl away, swamp song
any record of this misprint? is it rare?

  40. Can anyone recommend a website I can check past prices of TOOL vinyl to see if ones I’m looking at are reasonable? I use popsike.com and what’s available in disccogs…but i’d like another.

  41. @Eric – Best site I use is collectorsfrenzy.com. It’s pretty much the same as PopSike but they don’t give you a limited amount of free searches and you don’t have to sign up for anything.
